Package Markings:

It is important to have the following on your package:

  • Proper shipping name
  • ID #
  • Consignee or Shipper's name and address
  • Technical Names
  • Performance orientated markings

Labeling:

It is important to label your freight with the following:

  • Label for all hazard classes
  • Primary hazard class - #
  • Secondary Hazard classes have no number

 

Shipper's or carrier's maximum penalty for violation on Bills of Lading or movement bills is a civil penalty of $27,500 per day or a criminal penalty of $500,000 per day and five years in prison.

 

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SHIPPING PAPER

1.  Number of shipping units.

2.  Type of packaging.

3.  Shipping description:  proper shipping name, numeric hazard class, UN/NA identification number, and Packaging Group I, II, or III (in that order).

4.  Weight and unit of measurement.  (The haz mat weight must be listed separately.)

5.  Shippers signed certification of compliance with the hazardous material regulations.

6.  When a hazardous material and a material not subject to the hazardous material regulations are described together on the same shipping paper, the hazardous material(s):
  • must be listed first, or

  • must be entered in contrasting color from the other shipments or reproduction of a shipping paper may be marked with a highlighter pen, or
  • must be identified by an "X" marked in the "HM" column (shown in the example on the reverse side).

7.  When shipping a hazardous material, a 24 hour emergency response number must be provided.
